It was not until seven years from when Melanie Gibbons decided she wanted to become a member of the Parliament of New South Wales did she win a seat as an MP for Menai. Her decision to run was made in 2004 but her attempt to win pre-selection was unsuccessful. It was in 2011 when she finally became an MP for Menai.

She dedicated her time and effort to keeping her promises as soon as she assumed office. Her works include the improvement of Deadmans Creek Bridge, Heathcote Road expansion to a safer transportation route, and the M5 expansion. She also includes among her top priorities making services more accessible to the disadvantaged.
